Mount Alvernia Hospital Opens Second Outreach Medical Clinic At Agape Village

SINGAPORE, 20 AUGUST 2016 – Mount Alvernia Hospital (MAH), a not-for-profit general tertiary care hospital, officially opens its second outreach medical clinic - Mount Alvernia Outreach Medical Clinic (MAOMC) at Agape Village. In addition to providing primary care services, the clinic also provides subsidised dental services to the disadvantaged at Mount Alvernia Outreach Dental Clinic (MAODC). The dental services is a result of a collaborative effort with KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

Fully funded by Mount Alvernia Hospital, this initiative grows out of a passion to help the vulnerable, needy and under-served who have limited or no access to primary healthcare services.

Mr Lee Suen Ming, Chief Executive Officer of Mount Alvernia Hospital said, “We are privileged to be able to serve the vulnerable, needy and underserved. By filling a healthcare gap and taking care of their basic health needs, the beneficiaries can have a peace of mind to focus on overcoming their personal struggles and rebuilding their lives for a better future.”

“It is also very satisfying to see our outreach services expanded to include a dental clinic to provide a wider range of services for the less fortunate. We hope the medical and dental clinic services will complement the various community facilities and services already available at the Agape Village to better reach out, engage and serve the community” he added.

The clinics will be working in partnership with organisations like the National Council of Social Service, Community Chest and SCORE, and other voluntary welfare organisations such as Family Service Centres, Senior Activity Centres and Caritas Singapore Member Organisations, to reach out and engage with their beneficiaries. Unlike other free public clinics, MAOMC and MAODC adopt a more targeted approach to reach out to people who have fallen through the safety net and who are most in need.

MAOMC will provide general practitioner consultation and medication for the management of common colds and flu, fever, diarrhoea and constipation, joint aches and pains, headache and giddiness and other acute illnesses. MAODC is equipped with full dental facilities including restorative instruments and dental hand pieces.

Members of MAOMC & MAODC will only pay a nominal fee of $5 for all outpatient medical services and $10 for dental treatments at the clinics. To become a member, applications can be submitted through the partner VWO organisations that will assess applicant’s financial status before making a referral for membership.

The first outreach medical clinic was set up at Enabling Village, Redhill last year in October.

Mount Alvernia Hospital Welcomes Our First National Day 2016 Baby

SINGAPORE, AUGUST 9, 2016 – A baby girl has been delivered at Mount Alvernia Hospital at 00:00:01 this morning on National Day.

Weighing a healthy 3.465kg, the SG51 baby girl was delivered naturally.

The baby is the first child for proud parents, Raymond Toh, 39, and Wong Ying Ying, 37. Raymond is self-employed and Ying Ying is working as customer service at nanotechology at FEI. They got married last year in February. Raymond is Singaporean while Ying Ying is Singapore PR.

“We did not expect our baby girl to arrive on National Day. I was at my gynae clinic yesterday for my medical review and my doctor told me I was already dilated. He said I should plan to come into the hospital anytime. We went home to bring my personal belongings and arrive at the delivery suite yesterday around 5pm yesterday. I was feeling excited and at the same time, worried as this is my first baby,” Ying Ying said.

She is full of energy and chatted about getting her little one dresses and ribbons for the hair.

Despite experiencing morning sickness throughout her pregnancy, Ying Ying kept up with her job as a customer service representative and managed with smaller meals. “I was also lucky to have a supportive boss and a friendly work environment. My boss hired a temp staff to job-shadow and helps me cope.”

“We are delighted and thankful that our little girl is finally here in time to celebrate National Day. Best of all, everyone will always remember and celebrate her birthday; countdown and fireworks every year!” said Ying Ying.

“It is with tremendous joy when we deliver a baby into this world. Arriving in time to celebrate our 51st birthday has added significance. In addition to celebrating 51 years of independence, this year marks the beginning of our new chapter as we set forth towards establishing another successful jubilee for Singapore. I wish the little one, mummy and daddy as well as all in the family good health and stay happy always,” said Ms Shirley Tay, Director, Nursing.

Mount Alvernia Hospital’s Clinical Pastoral Care Counsellor Recognised At Healthcare Humanity Award 2016

SINGAPORE, 6 May 2016 – Clinical Pastoral Care Counsellor Sister Christiane Chua, has been  awarded the Healthcare Humanity Awards (HHA) 2016 for her commitment and dedication to  Clinical Pastoral Care.

“Clinical pastoral care is compassionate healthcare. It is about giving your full attention to another person, listen to them to have good communication and rapport. We must give our patients and their family emotional support and uphold them as illness dampens the spirit. We need to give them our love and respect, in turn, they will trust us and they can then have better peace of mind knowing that we sincerely care. We work as a team with doctors and nurses to treat each patient as a person, not the illness,” she said.

In recognition of her life-long service and dedication to patient care, Sr Christiane is selected by The Courage Fund to receive the Healthcare Humanity Awards during the ceremony to be held on 6 May 2016 at Ci Yuan Community Club.

Sister Christiane has an extraordinary rapport with people. People from all walks of life and levels in society not only will take to her immediately but will go out of their way to keep in touch with her. A religious sister of the Infant Jesus (IJ) congregation, Sister Christiane first worked in the orphanage in the Infant Jesus Convent at Victoria Street looking after abandoned babies and nursing them back to health. From 1961, she started to look after the elderly sisters in the infirmary in the convent at Victoria Street. Nursing was her joy and love and continues to be till today albeit she is in a different role as a Clinical Pastoral Care Counsellor.

In 1989, together with Sister Bernadette, our last year’s HHA Honour Medallion winner, Sister Christiane is one of our pioneers of the Clinical Pastoral Care service in the hospital and in Singapore. For more than 25 years, she has provided compassionate healthcare being present to others, acknowledging their humanity and supporting their need, whatever that may be.

Mount Alvernia Hospital Starts Outreach Medical Clinic

By working in partnerships with various voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs), the clinic aims to deliver healthcare services to the underserved community.

SINGAPORE, 26 NOVEMBER 2015 ”“ Mount Alvernia Hospital (MAH), a not-for-profit general tertiary care hospital, announces that its first community outreach medical clinic - Mount Alvernia Outreach Medical Clinic (MAOMC) - at Enabling Village is now fully operational.

Fully funded by the hospital, this initiative grows out of a passion to help those in need. Mr Lee Suen Ming, Chief Executive Officer of Mount Alvernia Hospital said, “The impetus to this initiative is derived from a realisation that not everyone has the means or resources to take care of their basic health needs, even if they know their health status through our community screening programme. The members from the Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (SCORE) are an example. A number of them still require help to reintegrate and to be gainfully employed before they can become self-sufficient. We decided to expand our cause by providing them with a familiar place where they know they will be treated for a small fee.”

“We are doing this, not only to help people when they are sick, but just as importantly, to enable them to maintain a quality of health so that they can enjoy all that life has to offer. It is our responsibility as a Catholic hospital. It is our mission.” added Mr Lee.

MAOMC will be working in partnership with organisations such as SG Enable, National Council of Social Service (NCSS), Caritas Singapore and SCORE to reach out and engage with their beneficiaries. Unlike other free public clinics, MAOMC adopts a targeted approach to reach out to people who have fallen through the safety net and who are most in need. More partnerships with other VWOs are in progress to include beneficiaries such as women or teenagers in pregnancy crisis, foreign workers and victims of human trafficking.

“We welcome the Mount Alvernia Outreach Medical Clinic as one of our valued partners in the Enabling Village. The clinic complements the various community facilities and services here. More importantly, Mount Alvernia Hospital's compassion to outreach to less advantaged members of the community is a testament to the spirit of giving and volunteerism that we hope to cultivate within the Enabling Village and beyond,” said Ms Ku Geok Boon, Chief Executive Officer, SG Enable.

“One of the main beneficiaries we want to serve is the people with disabilities (PwDs) who are also financially needy.  We are very fortunate to partner SG Enable to better reach out to and engage these PwDs.” said Mr Goh Hock Soon, Director, Corporate Development and Community Engagement, Mount Alvernia Hospital.

“The clinic at the Enabling Village is the hospital's first outreach clinic.  We hope to set up a few more outreach clinics in different parts of Singapore over the next few years to bring our services closer to the beneficiaries.” added Mr Goh.

The clinic will provide general practitioner consultation and medication for the management of common colds and flu, fever, diarrhoea and constipation, joint aches and pains, headache and giddiness and other acute illnesses.

The clinic at Enabling Village is staffed with a registered nurse, doctors and is equipped with triage medical supplies and medicine. Members of MAOMC will only pay a nominal fee of $5 for all outpatient treatments. To become a member, applications can be submitted through the partner VWO organisations.

Mount Alvernia Opens New Inpatient Wards

Additional bed capacity will cater to population's rising demand for quality healthcare services and reduced waiting time for inpatient admission.

SINGAPORE, 30 JULY, 2015 “ Mount Alvernia Hospital (MAH), a general tertiary care hospital, announces the official opening of its new maternity ward as well as medical and surgical wards.

The new St Michael maternity ward is fully operational with eight single beds for expectant mothers. St Dominic ward, designed for medical and surgical patients, has 15 single rooms. The existing St Francis medical and surgical ward is also expanded with additional 10 new beds.

Mount Alvernia Hospital Clinical Pastoral Care Counsellor Received Honourable Mention at the Healthcare Humanity Awards Ceremony

SINGAPORE, April 27, 2015 “ A trained nurse and midwife, Sister Bernadette, age 76, dedicated her life to healthcare and had served generations of patients since 1966 through the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM).

In recognition of her life-long service and dedication to patient care, she is selected by The Courage Fund to receive the Healthcare Humanity Awards Honourable Mention Medallion from President Tony Tan Keng Yam, who is also the Patron-In-Chief of The Courage Fund, during the ceremony held on 27 April 2015 at Matrix Auditorium @ Biopolis.

She was one of the first few local Sisters who joined Mount Alvernia Hospital after it was opened in 1961. She was trained and worked as a nurse and midwife before moving on to be trained to work as a Clinical Pastoral Care counsellor in the 1980s. Prior to Mount Alvernia Hospital, Sister Bernadette did nursing at the old Mandalay Road Hospital isolation ward for tuberculosis patients in 1957.

Being a missionary and a trained healthcare worker, she melds both vocational qualities in her present role in Clinical Pastoral Care. ”Pastoral Care is the language of being human and relating as honestly as possible. As a pastoral caregiver, I need to be confident, warm, caring, understanding and non-judgmental; leading the patients to wholeness and healing. I feel privileged to be able to provide pastoral support during the patients' most difficult times,” said Sister Bernadette.

”Sister Bernadette is an inspirational role model who is always and ever willing to go beyond her normal duties to offer care and comfort to the sick,” said Mr Lee Suen Ming, Chief Executive Officer of Mount Alvernia Hospital. ”We hope her conviction and enthusiasm, like all the pioneering sisters who devote their life to serve the sick, will inspire our younger healthcare workforce to carry on the legacy of patient caring.”

Recognizing her patients' vulnerabilities, she walks with her patients throughout the healing process. It begins with ensuring a peaceful state of mind, finding an emotional balance and finally physical recovery. At times when patients are at the hospital without family or friends, she becomes the ”family” to them.

Sister Bernadette relates the story of a young couple from Myanmar who nearly lost their baby.   She journeyed with the patient, supported them through that very dark and frightening time of their life. Thankfully their baby boy was safely delivered after an emergency operation. The couple came back to the hospital to thank Sister Bernadette and even brought a visiting priest from Myanmar who was in Singapore for a retreat to witness their joy and comfort of having had Sister Bernadette by their side every step of their journey.

The needs and comfort of patients have always come first for Sister Bernadette. There were many occasions when she would wake up late at night to take care of the patients in need even though her shift was already over. She would also visit other patients who had been discharged but were still unwell and recovering at home.

”I remember seeing a retired civil servant in his sixties. On the first visit, we did not talk much. I called in the next few days and we gradually got to know each other. He talked to me at different times about his life; both the good and the bad. It helps him sort out many things in his own mind and recognised his part in all that had happened in his life. Step by step, he began to reconcile with his past. Through the visits, I sensed that he needed something deeper and asked if he would like to see a priest. When he said that he would, I arranged for one of the local priests to talk and pray with him. This proved to be the turning point. His family visited him often and he lived out his remaining days at peace with himself and his family.”

”My work is a great source of joy and enrichment for myself personally. I hope to be able to enjoy this special privilege for as long as I can,” she added.

Mount Alvernia Hospital Delivers Its First SG50 Baby

Singapore, January 1, 2015 “ A baby girl has been delivered at Mount Alvernia Hospital at 8.04am this morning on New Year's Day.

Weighing a healthy 3.568kg, the SG50 baby girl, Della Wu, was delivered naturally.

This baby is the second child for proud Singaporean parents, Jack Wu Guo Wei, 34, and Fanni Yang Zihui, 32. They have a boy age 2. Jack is an investment analyst and Fanni is a lecturer at ITE College Central. They got married in 2010.

”We did not expect Della to arrive on New Year's Day. We were having dinner at an Italian restaurant at around 6.45pm last night when the contraction started. But we had time to watch the New Year countdown on television and came to labour ward around 3.30am.” Jack said.

”We are thankful that our precious little girl is one of the first jubilee babies to arrive! For a start, her birthdays will always be celebrated by many all over the world; literally a countdown and fireworks every year.” says father, Jack.

”I wish for my little girl to be healthy, bright and kind. I nicknamed her my little muffin and her brother, my little cookie. Both are my sugar rush!” exclaims mother, Fanni.

”It's always a tremendous joy when we deliver a new baby into this world. A baby born in this special year as Singapore celebrates 50 years of independence has added significance. It is both a time to remember and appreciate the pioneers who laid the foundation for nation building 50 years ago and a time for many Singaporeans to look forward to the next 50 years.” said Goh Hock Soon, Director Of Corporate Development, Mount Alvernia Hospital.

As the hospital's first SG50 baby, Director of Nursing, Ms Grace Koh, presented an ”˜ang pow' as blessing to the little one, Singapore Golden Jubilee Baby Gift 2015 from the government, POSB Smiley Gift Bag, a commemorative medallion from Mount Alvernia Hospital and Nestle to both parents Jack and Fanni.

Mount Alvernia Hospital Deploys Wireless Temperature Monitoring For Kids

Singapore, 29 December 2014 - Mount Alvernia Hospital, a private general acute care hospital in Singapore, is deploying a wireless temperature monitoring system in its pediatric wards, the first hospital in Singapore to deploy such a system for use on children. It is also deploying a mother-infant matching system in its maternity wards.

The temperature monitoring system monitors a patient's body temperature continuously without nurses' intervention and alerts nurses to abnormal readings. It will be used primarily to monitor children who have fever. This system will not only help to enhance patient care but also help to reduce nurses' workload by obviating the need for nurses to take hourly measurements manually.

The mother-infant matching system automatically detects whether a baby given to a mother is the correct baby and then alerts the mother accordingly. This system will give both mothers and caregivers added peace of mind.

Both systems are supplied by Cadi Scientific, a Singapore company that designs and develops radio frequency identification (RFID) solutions for use in healthcare.

Mount Alvernia Hospital Opens New Medical Centre D
  • Eight-storey building with over 50 medical suites and a new outpatient laboratory
  • Mount Alvernia Hospital to bring in more specialists and to expand existing specialties

Singapore, 20 October 2014 “ The new Medical Centre D at Mount Alvernia Hospital (MAH) officially opens today by the Minister for Health, Mr Gan Kim Yong, and blessing by the Most Rev. Archbishop William Goh.

The new eight-storey building will house  over 50 medical suites, covering a wide range of specialties like cardiology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, neurology, obstetrics and gynaecology.   The new building will allow MAH to expand its existing pool of specialists and to bring in new specialties to better cater to the healthcare needs of the patients in the future.

”It is imperative as a hospital that we must have the latest facilities and the best doctors in the various specialties.  This will enable us to offer the best treatment for our patients”, says recently appointed Chief Executive Officer, Mr Lee Suen Ming.

The new outpatient laboratory in the medical centre is also designed with patients' comfort and convenience in mind.   The laboratory features dedicated patient resting areas and child-friendly play areas to enhance patients' experience when they undergo laboratory tests.

The building also provides 350 car parking lots, including designated lots for the disabled, to enhance accessibility to the hospital for patients, their families, visitors and doctors.

The new building was completed in April this year, and 34 specialist clinics have been serving the patients since July.  Medical Centre D is part of MAH's infrastructure enhancement plan to increase capacity and to meet the demands of a growing and ageing population in Singapore.  It also signifies the commitment of MAH to provide holistic patient-centric services at affordable rates.

”Our key focus in the past has been on maternity and paediatric care, and this will remain as one of the hospital's core focus moving forward.   But in view of the rapidly ageing population in Singapore, we will also be designing and re-aligning our services and facilities to better meet the needs of the ageing population in future.  As a hospital, we hope to support our patients throughout their entire life journey”, says Suen Ming.

Mount Alvernia Hospital Unveils new Parentcraft Centre
Mount Alvernia Hospital Unveils new Parentcraft Centre

Enhanced Facilities are a Response to Patients' Feedback

Mount Alvernia Hospital (MAH) today launched the Alvernia Parentcraft Centre, a one-stop centre for parents of newborn babies.

The Alvernia Parentcraft Centre offers parents the convenience of a one-stop centre to cater to all their needs in preparing for childbirth and in caring for the newborn. MAH has been offering personalised consultation and advice by visiting each and every patient at their wards, going to their homes upon request and advising them over the phone. With rising demand from patients and parents/parents-to-be, there is a need for a full-fledged Parentcraft Centre. The Alvernia Parentcraft Centre features a cosy lobby and mini library offering a wide range of breastfeeding resources including parenting guides, books and reference materials on parenting and nursing.

Mr Khoo Chow Huat, Mount Alvernia Hospital's CEO said, ”The Alvernia Parentcraft Centre is a result of a thorough review of Mount Alvernia Hospital's maternity facilities following feedback received from patients and the public. We have, over the years, been known for our Parentcraft and lactation consultancy, and are seeing a rise in demand for this service both from patients within and outside of MAH. The new Parentcraft Centre within MAH will allow us to better meet this need. With a one-stop centre that provides a comprehensive range of services, we hope to give, especially first-time parents, the confidence and support they need in caring for their newborn.”

The Alvernia Breastfeeding Mothers' Support Group is one of the best examples of how the Parentcraft Centre was designed with patients in mind. The Alvernia Breastfeeding Mothers' Support Group grew out of a need for first-time parents to support each other during their nursing years.

In designing the new Centre, care was taken to ensure that nursing mothers who shared a common goal could come together, support one another and tap into the vast array of resources at the Centre.

Mount Alvernia Hospital champions the importance of providing professional quality care in taking care of newborn babies. Dr Ho Hon Kwok, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, HK Ho Women & Fertility Clinic at Mount Alvernia Medical Centre said, ”I'm pleased with the setting up of the Mount Alvernia Parentcraft Centre. This will be the nexus for all those involved with the care of the nursing mums to come together with their expertise under one roof. It is a significant milestone in the postnatal care of women for Mount Alvernia Hospital. I congratulate Mount Alvernia Hospital on this success.”

The Alvernia Parentcraft Centre is staffed by a team of six full-time Parentcraft/lactation consultants. Services provided by the Centre include:

  • Antenatal Consultation
  • Childbirth Education
  • Breastfeeding (1-1 Consultation or Group)
  • Personalised Consultation on Newborn Care/ Bathing Baby
  • Bottle Feeding and Weaning classes
  • Healthy Weaning Diet for Baby classes
  • Baby Massage Class
  • Personalised Home Care Service
  • Confinement Nanny / Caregiver Training
  • Alvernia Breastfeeding Mothers' Support Group

Minister of State for Community Development, Youth & Sports Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Guest-of-Honour at the opening ceremony said, ”The hospital stay is an important touch-point for a mother and father of a newborn “ especially if they are first-time parents. I am heartened that Mount Alvernia Hospital has made it a priority to provide new parents with a dedicated resource centre and crucial care support. Such support will ease the young parents into their new roles, so that they enjoy the experience of parenthood. This complements my Ministry's efforts of putting in place policies, infrastructure and programmes to make Singapore the best place for families and children. ”

Mount Alvernia Hospital has also published ”Successful Breastfeeding “ A Practical Guide” a comprehensive local publication on breastfeeding in Singapore. Written by Mount Alvernia Hospital's Senior Lactation Consultant Ms Kang Phaik Gaik, the guide provides parents a wealth of information on breastfeeding, from the technical do's and don'ts to the common misconceptions surrounding breastfeeding.

Mr Khoo added, ”What is valuable about this publication is the local Singapore context that it gives to breastfeeding. Sister Kang's many years of experience and rich knowledge can be found in this book which we hope all mothers can benefit from. It also demonstrates Mount Alvernia Hospital's commitment to support the government's pro-family policy; to look beyond the immediate clientele of patients to reach out to all Singapore parents.”

The book was launched at the opening of the Alvernia Parentcraft Centre.
