Dr Ong Chin Hu

Dr Ong Chin Hu is a Consultant Urologist, with Fellowship recognition from various local and international institutions including the Academy of Medicine (FAMS), Singapore, the European Board of Urology (FEBU), and the Royal College of Surgeons'(FRCS), Glasgow, UK.

Prior to this, Dr Ong was Consultant Urologist for Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for three years where he is still a visiting consultant. He is also currently an assistant renal transplant surgeon with the National Organ Transplant Unit (NOTU), Singapore.

Dr Ong graduated with MBBS Honours from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in 1997 and completed his Basic Surgical Training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in 2001. Thereafter, he furthered his Advanced Surgical Urology training at Alexandra Hospital (AH) and the National University Hospital (NUH) completing with distinction in 2008. He won the European Board of Urology (EBU) book prize and College of Surgeons' Gold Medal in 2008 for his achievement. He underwent his fellowship training on Uro-oncology and Reconstructive Urology under distinguished Urologist, Professor Urs Studer at the Bern University Hospital, Switzerland in 2009.

In 2010, he worked as the Laparoscopic Uro-oncology Fellow at the Nepean Hospital (University of Sydney teaching hospital), Australia under Professor Mohammad Khadra. In 2012, Dr Ong was the Japanese Urological Association (JUA) International Foundation Scholar, where he had further Laparoscopic and Robotic Uro-oncology training at the Kobe University Hospital, Japan under Professor Masato Fujisawa.

He has a vast experience in the management of adult & children ENT conditions and has an interest in ear & hearing problems, voice, sore throat, neck lumps (including thyroid – salivary gland) as well as nose-sinus diseases. He is also one of the very few medical specialists in the region who is certified to complement his medical practice with acupuncture. Through his collaboration with Kendang Kerbau Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Dr Eng is well positioned to manage all children’s ENT conditions including hearing implantation for the deaf.

Subsequently, he traveled under the prestigious national scholarship (SingHealth Health Manpower Development Programme Award) to train with renowned world experts to develop his subspecialty interests, which included the University of Toronto (Canada), University of Wisconsin (USA), UCL de Mont Godinne (Belgium) and Portmann Ear Institute (France).

Since his return, Dr Eng became the first surgeon in South East Asia to perform the Retro-X Semi-implantable hearing device for hearing loss. He also pioneered the otology service and introduced laser surgery in the centre where he previously worked.

Dr Eng is academically active and widely published. He contributed actively as reviewer of the Singapore Medical Journal & European ENT Journal and has published many articles and book chapters. He was also the director of the 4th Asia Pacific Otology Meeting and co-director of the 1st Singapore ENT Laser Course.

Dr Leong is the first and only Singaporean doctor to be trained in Rhinology and Allergy in the world renowned Cleveland Clinic, USA. The fellowship director was Dr Martin J. Citardi, an international authority in Rhinology. He also pioneered the Immunotherapy treatment in the Singapore General Hospital in 2006.

He is internationally recognized for his surgical expertise and academic contributions particularly in the fields of Nasal Allergy, Rhinology and Nasopharyngeal Cancer (NPC) screening. Dr Leong is a leader in the use of minimally invasive endoscopic surgical techniques for the treatment of Sinusitis (FESS) and resection of nasal/anterior skull base tumours. He is also well known in the use of image guided surgery (IGS) and advanced endoscopic work such as Cerebrospinal (CSF) leak repair and trans-sphenoidal pituitary surgery. He is trained to treat Nasal Allergy using both subcutaneous & sublingual immunotherapy. His other interests include Paediatric ENT allergy/ diseases and general ENT diseases.

He has a keen interest in research and was awarded the Singapore Cancer Society Overseas Fellowship in 1999. He researched on the effects of Radiation on Epidermal Growth Factor Receptors (EGFR) expression in Squamous Cell Carcinoma under the tutelage of Prof Randal Weber and Prof Ruth Muschel from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr Leong is keen in academic teaching. He travels widely internationally to conduct courses in FESS surgeries. These places include Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Indonesia and others. He is also the Director of the very successful inaugural International Basic Allergy Course, held in conjunction with the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy in Singapore in July 2010.

Dr Mark is a Consultant Ear Nose Throat Surgeon and Director of Sleep Services in Ascent Ear Nose Throat Specialist Group.

His special interests include the treatment of Snoring, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, Sleep Disorders, Nasal obstruction, Thyroid lumps and Cancers of the Head and Neck region. 

Dr Mark received his medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1994. He underwent his specialty training in ENT in Singapore under the National ENT Training programme. He completed his Membership examinations in Surgery and was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1999. In 2002, he obtained his Masters of Medicine degree from NUS in Otolaryngology and completed his Fellowship examinations in Otolaryngology from the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow.

Dr Mark was awarded the SingHealth Health Manpower Development Plan Award in 2005 to do a fellowship in Sleep Surgery at Stanford University, USA. The Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic is an international leading clinical and research centre for Sleep Medicine and Stanford was where many of the pioneering surgical techniques to treat snoring and sleep apnoea were first described. Dr Mark has passed the American Board examinations in Sleep Medicine in 2006 and is therefore qualified as a certified Sleep Specialist by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, making him one of a few Sleep Specialists worldwide and the only ENT Surgeon in Singapore with this prestigious qualification. 

Dr Mark is actively involved in education and clinical science research and was the principal and co-investigator of several research projects involving Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma. He has written a book on polysomnography (sleep studies) and has contributed to several book chapters on otorhinolaryngology and sleep medicine. He is actively involved in lecturing at many sleep medicine and otorhinolaryngology conferences in the Asia Pacific Region and also continues to teach medical students and post-graduate ENT residents in Singapore. He is also active in the Singapore Sleep Society and was the Chairperson of the Singapore Sleep Awareness Week campaign conducted in March 2010. He is currently the Vice-President of the Society.

While he was with the Singapore General Hospital, Dr Mark was in charge of running the Sleep Clinic in the Department of Otolaryngology to streamline the management of patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. He was also on staff at the Sleep Disorders Unit in SGH to treat patients with Sleep Disorders and to provide surgical expertise to patients who require surgery for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Snoring. The Sleep Disorders Unit is a multi-disciplinary unit consisting of Neurologists, Respiratory Physicians, Psychiatrists, ENT surgeons, Dental Specialists, Psychologists and Sleep Technicians providing comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care to patients with sleep disorders.
